Training Your Boston Terrier

Several training tips on training your Boston Terrier.  Information on what to expect from your Boston Terrier
while teaching him some basic manners.

While training your Boston Terrier you need to keep in mind that your dog is your companion and your friend.  Your human friends deserve your respect, love and understanding, so therefore, does your dog.  You also expect your friends to act in such a way that they don’t embarrass you, so also you want your dog not to have unruly, rude behavior.

Puppies from the age of 10 weeks to 20 weeks have the highest success rate of training.  This is because their brains are like sponges that soak up all the liquid.  They don’t have their hormones yet so they look to their owner as their leader who provides them with shelter, food, water and comfort.  They will be eager to please.  In training your Boston Terrier you will want to keep in mind that a dog who is 6 months to 1 year has a slower rate of learning capabilities since their hormones have kicked in and their interest wanders and their curiosity peaks.

It is prudent to keep in mind while training your Boston Terrier that no one including your dog likes mean or abusive treatment.  It is my opinion that your dog will respect and listen to you much more willingly with rewards rather than punishment.  Also making the training sessions fun for both you and your dog will bring faster results.

The tools for training your Boston Terrier are as follows::  1)lures –(treats and toys), 2) rewards ( praise and affection, and 3) knowledge.  Knowledge is probably the most important of these tools.  It is very important to learn all you can about training your Boston Terrier.  Read, watch videos, and watch or participate in training classes.

Most likely one of the things you will want to do is housebreak your puppy.   A puppy needs to relieve himself after he eats and after any activity.  A puppy needs to be taken out about every hour.   A puppy needs a clearly defined area where he can sleep, eat, play and live.  Your puppy’s crate should be large enough that he can lie down and stretch and should be kept in an area where he can see the family activities.  Dogs by nature do not want to soil their sleeping and living space so it will be up to you to make sure that you take him out enough that he won’t have to mess up his crate.  The same rules apply to an older dog you are trying to housebreak except that they do not need to relieve themselves as often.  An older dog will usually need to go out after meals.  You will need to understand your dogs habits and be able to recognize when they are trying to get your attention.

While training your Boston Terrier keep your training sessions short and fun so that your dog will enjoy them.  Also, the more repetitive, the better.  It is better to use one or two words for your commands and always use the same command for each particular action.  Always remember to reward your dog with praise and a treat when he responds to your commands.

When your dog disobeys or does something that your don’t want him to do, be very firm and use a word like “NO”.  Just  your tone will let your Boston Terrier know that you are not happy with his actions.  After several times of this repeated action, your dog will learn what you do not want him to do.

Boston Terrier puppies like to nibble and sometimes they will use your fingers or hands to nibble on.  If he does this, pull back your hand and say “ouch”.  Doing this a couple of times and you dog will learn not to bite your fingers too hard.

Using these techniques while training your Boston Terrier will bring the results you want.  Since intelligence is a characteristic of this breed, training your Boston Terrier will not be too difficult and should bring happiness to both you and your dog.
